SEND - Special educational need or disability

A pupil has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

They have a learning difficulty or disability if they have:

A significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or

A disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools.

Special educational provision is educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for other children or young people of the same age by mainstream schools.

Special and additional needs at ODA

Where a pupil is identified as having SEN, schools should take action to help remove barriers to learning and put effective special educational provision in place. A plan should be agreed to help support the child/young person in making progress and securing good outcomes.

We believe that the most effective way of ensuring progress for the most vulnerable children is through:

  • Quality First Teaching Methods

  • Ensuring children have the opportunity to spend as much time IN class as possible; this is where the most progress happens

  • Building staff expertise and knowledge round the four main areas of need

  • Regular recording of the actions that we are taking, the impact of those actions and the outcomes achieved.  This helps identify what support the child requires and what progress, if any, is being made. Data and Planning Days are key to this point.

  • Where progress still isn’t being made, the help and support will be gradually increased.  This is then where relevant external agencies can be involved, for example an Educational Psychologist or Specialist Teacher.

  • Effective use of external agencies and support services, involving class teachers whenever they can be.

  • Children with special or additional needs will all be supported through a Pupil Profile and Individual Inclusion Plan (INIP)
